The Fox at Oddington Is a Bucolic Cotswolds Inn

Hotel Snapshot

A countryside gem in the Cotswolds, The Fox at Oddington is a 19th-century coaching inn turned intimate six-room retreat by Carole Bamford (of Daylesford Organic fame). Following the success of The Wild Rabbit, this new opening deepens Bamford’s commitment to design-led, eco-conscious hospitality in one of England’s most charming regions.

Design & Character

Inside its honey-stone façade, The Fox pairs historic character with clean-lined modernity. Interiors blend rustic Cotswolds charm with elevated, earthy style: reclaimed wood floors, antler curtain hooks, vegetable-dyed leather seats, and soft lighting set the tone. Sustainability takes centre stage – from insulation made with local sheep’s wool to a living roof planted with wildflowers that attract pollinators. Expect locally sourced everything, right down to the tree-stump bedside tables.

Downstairs, the pub's maze of rooms offers warmth and whimsy: roaring fireplaces, velvet armchairs, and walls lined with rosettes and forest-green paneling. On warmer days, bi-fold doors open to a leafy terrace – perfect for alfresco meals or golden-hour drinks. The building runs entirely on renewable energy (solar, hydro, wind, and biomass), which is impressive and rare at this level of comfort.

The Rooms

The six rooms are beautifully put together, even if they veer towards the safe side. All share a serene palette of biscuit, cream, and soft blues, plus tactile layers that ooze comfort. The Master’s Suite is especially cocooning, with a handmade curtained bed tucked beneath exposed beams. The Den features a private patio, a working fireplace, and a freestanding tub – one of the spaces that truly stands out.

Textiles come from Nila, Bamford’s non-profit supporting traditional Indian handloom and natural dye techniques. Toiletries are Bamford, of course – natural, aromatic, and gorgeously packaged. If there’s a drawback, it’s that the rooms – though undeniably lovely – can feel a bit showroom-perfect.

The Food & Drink Situation

Led by head chef Alan Gleeson, the kitchen serves upscale British comfort food with flair. The ingredients are top-tier—local produce from Daylesford Organic and the Bamford-owned Wootton Estate features throughout. Pub snacks like ‘nduja scotch eggs are served in the cozy bar, while the smart Saddle Room restaurant offers refined dishes such as violet artichokes with burrata and dry-aged Hereford beef chateaubriand.

There’s real skill behind the cooking, though the menu occasionally plays it safe. Breakfast is a highlight: think flaky pastries, deep-orange-yolk eggs, and decadent French toast with apricots and crème fraîche. Drinks span local ales, craft cocktails (try the “Bees Knees” with gin, honey, and lavender), and a thoughtful non-alcoholic lineup.
