Design & Character

From the moment you step into this 9-key boutique hotel, you'll be immersed in a 19th-century mansion that bridges the past and present. The building was originally built in 1881 as a private residence by German architect Ernst Ziller, who designed more than 500 buildings throughout Greece, including the Presidential Mansion and the National Archaeological Museum. The historic Greek structure, classified by the Ministry of Culture as a modern monument, demonstrates Ziller’s ability to harmonize architectural styles. Monument Hotel Athens combines elements of the Renaissance, Northern European architecture, Byzantine influences, and the timeless elegance of Greek antiquity.

For his property, owner Grigoris Tolkas and the team from the local architecture studio MPlusM carefully restored the building to transform it into a contemporary hotel, preserving its original features and grandeur. Through meticulous efforts, the mansion, which had been abandoned for years, has been reborn and preserved for future generations. Aiming to conserve the building’s history, Tolkas worked closely with expert architects and restorers to ensure the delicate restoration of the frescoes, gypsum decorative details, carved marble balconies, and grand winding staircase. This restoration was not intended to erase the passage of time, but rather to reveal the beauty of the building's historic past, seamlessly integrating it with the present.

The Rooms

Each of its 9 rooms has its own personality, enhancing the building’s historical features while incorporating modern elements for a luxurious guest experience. Resembling the chambers of a historic mansion, the original palette of the neoclassical ceilings has influenced each bedroom’s colour palette of earthly, and limewashed warm tones and pink hues. The team has thoughtfully paired the colours with contemporary Scandinavian furniture, with custom-made pieces from brands such as Woud, &Tradition, and Frama. The modern bathrooms are discreetly hidden behind mirrored boxes, ensuring harmony with the design of the surroundings.

For first-time visitors, Epos is undoubtedly the perfect choice. This room lives up to its name, offering an experience that feels like a story unfolding. Its standout feature is the impressive marble veranda, which provides breathtaking views of the Acropolis and the Byzantine church of Agios Dimitrios. Equally exceptional is Nidus, the crowning jewel of the building. Nestled on the rooftop, it conveys intimacy and romance, making it an exceptional gem for those seeking a special retreat. The large doors open onto a spacious terrace and a private jacuzzi with unobstructed views of the Acropolis, the perfect spot for a sundowner after a day of exploring the city.
