Hotel Snapshot
The Fontenay, an architectural marvel located on the western shore of Hamburg's Outer Alster Lake, blends sculptural design with natural serenity in the heart of Germany's second-largest city. Conceived by celebrated architect Jan Störmer, the hotel boasts a seamless, curving silhouette of three interlocking circles, which echoes the surrounding shoreline and landscape. With 130 spacious rooms and suites, all facing outward to flood interiors with natural light, The Fontenay offers an elevated yet understated hospitality experience in a lush lakeside setting.
Design & Character
The Fontenay embodies the philosophy of "Modern Classic," which is a style rooted in Hamburg's understated elegance. Every detail, from the building's organic architecture to the custom-made furnishings, is designed with a sense of flow in mind. There are no sharp edges: hallways curve, sofas arc, and no two walls run parallel. Floor-to-ceiling windows open onto sweeping views of the lake and surrounding gardens.
The atrium, made from 198 stained glass panels, filters light through the hotel's center like a sculpture. Soft turquoise, beige, and royal blue tones mirror the hues of nature outside, while materials such as oak, green onyx, marble, and hand-tufted rugs are curated for both beauty and durability.
The Rooms
The 113 rooms and 17 suites are a study in quiet sophistication. Even the smallest Deluxe Rooms are 463 square feet, featuring private balconies, walk-in wardrobes, fine parquet floors made from oak sourced from Burgundy, and ceiling heights of nearly 10 feet. Bathrooms feature limestone, rainfall showers, soaking tubs, and underfloor heating. Lighting is adjustable, touchpads control blinds and climate, and televisions are discreetly mounted on rotating bars for seamless viewing.
Suites offer added privacy and comfort, featuring separate living areas, guest bathrooms, and kitchenettes. The Alster Suite and Fontenay Suite offer sweeping lake views, dining rooms for 10, and custom features, including concert pianos and expansive dressing rooms. The EUROPA 2 Suite, inspired by Hapag-Lloyd's luxury cruise ship, is the only one of its kind on land, with nautical-inspired décor and a calm, earthy color palette.
The Food & Drink
Culinary offerings are led by Executive Chef Stefan Wilke and Lakeside's two-Michelin-starred chef Julian Stowasser. Located on the 7th floor, Lakeside offers an innovative fine dining experience with panoramic lake views, a private dining salon, and a terrace. The restaurant is renowned for its wild, bold culinary creations, elegantly plated and expertly paired by Head Sommelier Stefanie Hehn, who crafts both wine and non-alcoholic pairings. A relaxed brasserie with a smart-casual atmosphere, the Parkview restaurant overlooks the Alster. It serves a range of dishes, from gourmet breakfasts featuring North German specialties to modern schnitzel, and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Atrium Lounge offers seasonal high tea by award-winning Chef Pâtissier Marco D'Andrea, alongside a library curated by Felix Jud and a Smoker's Room. On the 6th floor, The Fontenay Bar is a circular space with a rooftop terrace and a spectacular 320° view over the Alster Lake, including landmarks such as the Elbphilharmonie and Town Hall. It offers crafted cocktails, vermouth tastings via the signature "Wormwood Wagon," and a stylish ambiance for day-to-night enjoyment.
The Amenities
The rooftop infinity pool at The Fontenay offers one of Hamburg's most serene swim experiences. At 66 feet in length and extending from indoors to out, the warm pool appears to melt into the Alster Lake, framed by glass walls that reflect the sky and surroundings. Beautifully manicured gardens and inviting terraces provide peaceful spaces to relax, and the hotel's design-forward event spaces create a graceful setting for private functions.
The fitness center is equally refined. Outfitted with Technogym's Personal Line, designed by Antonio Citterio, it is open 24/7 and features the latest cardio and weight training equipment. Personal trainers, yoga instructors, and even running coaches can be arranged around the Alster by request.
Spa & Wellness Scoop
Located on the 6th floor, the Fontenay Spa spans 10,763.9 square feet and offers a serene sanctuary high above the city. With sweeping views of Alster Lake, the space is anchored by a 65.6-foot indoor/outdoor infinity pool whose waterline appears to merge with the lake itself. Guests can unwind in the Finnish-style panoramic sauna and steam room and enjoy showers or the ice well.
For those seeking privacy, the luxurious spa suite features a sauna, steam room, whirlpool, and lounge area with a TV, making it perfect for couples or small groups. Treatments incorporate high-performance products from Prof. Dr. Steinkraus and La Biosthetique, blending clean, science-backed skincare with holistic techniques. The spa's philosophy is rooted in gentle restoration, offering rituals designed to rejuvenate both body and mind.
