Bishop’s Gate Is an Edwardian Gem in the Historic Irish City of Derry

Occupying an Edwardian building dating to 1899, Bishop’s Gate Hotel is in the Northern Ireland city of Derry, a destination that's an untapped gem. Most travelers to Ireland from the U.S. don’t usually visit or even know what Derry is.

The property is in a prime location close to all the attractions and originally served as two residences. Later, it became a prestigious private club. In 2016, it took on a new life as Bishop’s Gate Hotel —a place that’s not contemporary or hip, but the classic setting is what makes it so endearing and special.

Design & Character

You’re living in the Edwardian era and steeped in elegance when you’re a guest at Bishop’s Gate. At a time when most boutique properties try to be sleek and contemporary, I personally loved how the hotel stays true to its roots. The original stairwells, walls, ceiling mouldings, and wood and brass details are very much still in place but have been beautifully restored. Colors lean dark but not dour with royal blues, emerald greens, and golds throughout.

The Rooms

The 31 guest rooms range from an entry-level deluxe to a penthouse suite. No matter the category, expect them to be comfortable and luxe with features such as dreamy king beds, sumptuous silk fabrics, and velvet headboards. Each has a distinct style and layout, but they all follow the same regal color theme as the public spaces.

My two-bedroom suite had a separate entrance on a side street and included a handsome sitting room plus a large bathroom. I felt like I was living in a charming Derry home.

Food & Drinks

The Wig Champagne Bar and the adjacent Gown restaurant form the heart of the hotel. Wig feels like an exclusive private club from the 19th century- which, in fact, is what this building formerly was. It retains its original Edwardian fireplace and offers a terrific and always-changing menu of wines by the glass and bottle. You’re in Northern Ireland, where whisky reigns supreme, so it’s no surprise that the varieties of Irish whiskies, plus gins from local bespoke brands, are plentiful.

The Gown is larger and buzzier. When I dined, it was filled with locals, many of whom are regulars. Although the cuisine is seasonal, the menu is solidly Irish. Guinness bread with local rapeseed oil and whipped butter is the precursor to your meal. Starters and mains include an Irish Brie with a ham croquette and a rack of Irish lamb, which are complemented by international plates such as chicken Kiev and a seafood medley katsu curry.

Amenities

The service from a staff of locals, who take pride in their city and do whatever they can to make your stay exceptional, is the biggest perk of hanging your hat at Bishop's Gate. They’re also well connected with restaurant and boutique owners and local tour guides and can create a personalized itinerary for you, either on the spot or in advance of your trip.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

Belfast tends to be the go-to for tourists to Northern Ireland. Having been there before and then visiting Derry, I find the latter to be warmer and more welcoming. There’s lots to see and do, and Bishop’s Gate is within walking distance of most attractions.

The most popular, the 400-year-old city walls, are just five minutes away. The Guildhall, the town hall, which has temporary and permanent exhibitions of everything from art to artifacts, is also nearby. Venture a little further- ten minutes max- and you’ll reach the Bogside, where colorful monumental murals transform the buildings into gallery walls.

You’re also steps away from plenty of lively bars and restaurants and can pass a night in town checking at least a few of them out.
