Hotel Snapshot
When visiting Switzerland, it is paramount to see the Swiss Alps. And when visiting the Swiss Alps, it is paramount to stay, well, in the mountains. There are few better places to do just that than Hotel Aspen, an idyllic mountain hideaway tucked into the foothills of the Eiger North Face that combines the best of alpine adventure and rustic luxury. Originally opened in 1934 as a café designed to take in the beauty of Grindelwald—a beloved base for hikers, skiers, and adventurers in the Jungfrau region—the property was transformed into Hotel Aspen in the mid-1980s. A major renovation in 2012 unveiled the stunning version guests experience today.
Design & Character
Designed as an elevated ski lodge, the all-season charm of Hotel Aspen is apparent the moment you set foot on the property. The log cabin's facade immediately evokes a sense of rustic charm, which is also present throughout the rest of the property. In total, Hotel Aspen boasts 39 rooms, each outfitted in the same lodge aesthetic, featuring beautiful pine walls, gingham-patterned seating, and leather chairs. Bathrooms are modern and chic, complete with bathtubs and heated towel racks for maximum relaxation at the end of a long day.
The Rooms
Hotel Aspen takes a “something for everyone” approach with its accommodations. Couples or solo travelers can enjoy a classic alpine retreat in the Alpin Chic double rooms, some of which feature an open loft gallery perfect for kids. Larger groups or families can book one of the spacious suites, including a showstopping penthouse suite that boasts three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a separate living area, and panoramic views. Across all room types, expect plush furnishings and awe-inspiring vistas of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks.
Food & Drink
Guests can dine at Hotel Aspen’s award-winning on-site restaurant, which highlights regional ingredients and Swiss wines. The menu offers modern reinterpretations of classic dishes—don’t miss the standout burger. The daily complimentary breakfast includes made-to-order eggs, pancakes, waffles, and even sparkling wine for an indulgent start to the morning. Bonus: every afternoon, guests are treated to complimentary coffee and cake—an alpine ritual we fully endorse.
Amenities
Hotel Aspen goes beyond stunning rooms and views of the adjacent peaks, Mönch and Jungfrau—it delivers thoughtful perks like shuttle service, outdoor terraces, and ski-in/ski-out access to nearby mountain areas. It’s also situated just above the main village, making it feel wonderfully tucked away, while still being easily reachable via Grindelwald’s excellent public transportation system.
Spa & Wellness Scoop
And as adventure-forward as Grindelwald and the entire Jungfrau region may be, Hotel Aspen also takes its R&R extremely seriously. That’s made abundantly apparent by way of the property’s fabulous spa, which features waterbeds, an old wood sauna, and multiple bath options (including an herbal bath and brine bath). During the warmer months, be sure to check out the outdoor whirlpool, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
Location & Neighborhood
While many hotels in the charming village of Grindelwald are situated closer to the downtown area of the municipality, Hotel Aspen immediately stands out for its somewhat removed locale. While still easily accessible via Grindelwald’s robust bus system (and Hotel Aspen’s own shuttles), the property is situated a few hundred meters above the rest of the town, providing a beautiful view of not only the mountains just beyond, but the village just below as well.
No matter what speed of vacation you’re aiming for in the Swiss Alps, staying at Hotel Aspen is undoubtedly the right gear.
