Hotel Snapshot

You wouldn’t expect to find Japanese elegance in the Swiss Alps, but Grindellodge delivers exactly that—and more. Nestled in the beautiful village of Grindelwald, the gateway to adventures in Switzerland’s Jungfrau Region, this year-round gem offers stunning hikes and lush greenery in the warmer months, and world-class skiing and snow activities in winter. Whatever your adventure of choice, Grindellodge is the perfect home base.

Design & Character

This 20-room boutique property completed a major overhaul in 2025, blending Swiss alpine charm with Japanese minimalism. It’s a tribute to the longstanding diplomatic ties between Japan and Switzerland, dating back over 150 years.

The lobby makes an immediate impression with its striking cherry blossom tree at center stage, soft pink and beige tones, and layered rugs that warm the wooden floors. Darker walls in the stairwells and elevator bank add drama and help cool the space in summer. Throughout, Japanese design principles meet alpine coziness in thoughtful, subtle ways.

The Rooms

The same color palettes are found across the hotel, regardless of which of the 20 architect-designed accommodations you may find yourself in. All interiors feature soft, feminine sakura tones with natural wood finishes that reflect both Japanese woodwork and the Grindelwald surroundings. Enormous windows are perfect not only for letting in the copious light of the region, but also for marveling at your picture-perfect surroundings. Every room, from the snug Yama Room Tiny to the spacious Yama Loft, features a balcony for savoring the sights and scents of Grindelwald.

We’re also obsessed with the bathrooms at Grindellodge, featuring rainfall showers, Rituals skincare products, heated towel racks, and just the right amount of soft lighting to start (or end) your day.

Food & Drink

Breakfast, included in your stay, features regionally sourced cheese, honey, and fruit alongside fresh pastries, eggs, and sausages. Come evening, the dining room transforms into Umami Works Restaurant—Grindelwald’s first Japanese restaurant—where Tokyo-native Chef Shota Hasegawa serves ramen, donburi bowls, sushi, and more.

Amenities

If you’re traveling with a family or group, the Yama Loft shines with two levels, two king beds, two bathrooms, and a balcony with views of the North Face (yes, that North Face). The Yama Suite offers room for up to four, thanks to a separate living area with a pull-out sofa bed.

And while there’s no shortage of things to do outside the hotel, if you’re looking for a day of pure relaxation, head to the bijou spa that is exclusive to hotel guests, featuring a sauna, indoor whirlpool, relaxation area with a large waterbed, and plenty of refreshments.

Location & Neighborhood

Just a short bus ride away from the main terminal of Grindelwald, the hotel sits toward the top of a hill on the far eastern side of the village, just below the stunning treeline. The hotel’s elevated position means guests enjoy sweeping views of the Eiger, while staying close to the region’s endless outdoor pursuits.

Whatever the season, Grindellodge promises a memorable, design-forward stay in one of Switzerland’s most beautiful alpine villages.
