Set the Scene
In case you haven’t heard, The Corner Store is one of—if not the—most talked about and hard-to-get-into restaurants in New York. Aptly named, it’s set on the corner of a SoHo block and serves American favorites that we all know and love.
It’s a concept courtesy of Catch Hospitality Group, which is behind the see-and-be-seen Catch brand, a seafood, sushi, and steak spot with outposts nationwide, including in Aspen and New York.
Vintage elements prevail throughout the warmly-lit space and make for a welcoming atmosphere where you want to hang out: don’t miss the green onyx bar top with an antique mirror as the backdrop and the chevron wood floors, plus the sumptuous banquette seating in velvet and leather upholstery in the two dining areas.
Once you actually manage to snag a reservation—even if it’s a 5 p.m. slot—you’ll be treated like a VIP by the friendly staff who are willing to go the extra mile to make your experience live up to expectations. There’s no snobbery in the air.
What’s the Food Like?
The best part about eating at The Corner Store is that everyone on the menu is familiar and grabs your eye. This is also a dilemma. You can’t really go wrong with the comforting spinach & artichoke dip with aged white cheddar and parmesan, accompanied by housemade tortilla chips, or the five cheese pizza rolls with chili hot honey.
On the lighter side, for starters, the raw seafood selection, including an excellent bluefin tuna tartare with basil oil, is a hit, as are the fresh, crisp salads.
Looking at mains, the steaks are a winner and show off premium-cut beef- the steak frites with pepper au poivre sauce has our vote. We’re also fans of the branzino with honey-melted tomatoes, the plancha-grilled chicken paillard, and the hand-cut triple-blanced French fries.
It doesn’t matter how full you are: you can’t say “no” to dessert, especially if you’re talking about the Samoa sundae with coconut soft serve, brown butter caramel, and salted shortbread crumble or the apple hand pies with a vanilla bean dixie cup—it’s a throwback to your childhood days and simply works.
Let’s Talk About the Drinks
Martinis are the star of the beverage lineup and are presented with old-world glamour from a tableside cart. Is it Vesper Martini you’re having with vodka, gin, lemon, and chamomile tea, or is the Tomato, crafted with horseradish, housemade tomato water, and vermouth, more your speed? Do like us, and go for both. Other cocktails are fun, especially the Pornstar Royale with vodka, sherry, passion fruit, lime, and champagne. The wine list travels the world.
Final Thoughts
The Corner Store may be among the most sought-after restaurants in the city, but it’s worth the hype. The food is solid, and the service is warm.
