Treehouses, Tasting Menus, and 37,000 Acres: Montana’s Paws Up Has It All

Hotel Snapshot

A two-lane highway snakes along the Blackfoot River while the towns of Missoula and Bonner whisk by. The drive is scenic and peaceful, and within forty minutes, towering pine trees and endless blue skies open up to a stretch of land that feels a world away. Set on 37,000 acres and complete with herds of horses, sprawling accommodations, and a culinary scene that’s hard to beat, Paws Up is (as Montanans like to say) the last best place.

Located in Greenough, this five-star stay captures the perfect blend of wilderness and class. Guests can call massive timber cabins home, sleep under the stars in riverside safari tents, or enjoy pure luxury and seclusion at the green o—an adults-only hideaway set deep within the pines right on property. Days are filled with horseback rides, cattle drives, and fly fishing, while nights consist of wine by the firepits and dips in private hot tubs. It’s less a resort and more its own private national park, paired with everything a refined traveler could wish for.

Design & Character

Paws Up has three very different accommodation styles, each with its own personality but all grounded in that signature mix of Montana charm and elevated comfort. The 27 ranch homes scattered across the property lean into classic Western style with timber beams, stone fireplaces, and giant windows that make the plains feel like part of the room. They’re the kind of places where muddy boots and a glass of Bordeaux feel equally at home.

A bit deeper in the property, hidden in a thick pine forest, the green o is like stepping into a secret. Essentially a resort within a resort, these 12 modern treehouse-style “hauses” are built to disappear into the landscape. The four designs are sleek but never cold—choose between Green Hauses, Tree Hauses, Round Hauses, and Light Hauses. Our favorite? The Tree Hauses, of course, which feature two stories perched 23 feet above the ground with decks that put you eye‑level with the treetops. A spiral staircase leads to the bedroom up top, and a hot tub waiting below brings you right back down to earth.

And last but not least, the safari-style tents channel a “best-of-both-worlds” vibe: canvas walls mixed with hardwood floors, plush beds, and en-suite bathrooms. Designed to put you as close to nature as possible without giving up comfort, they’re right along the Blackfoot River. Add in personal chefs and activities, and it’s glamping done right.

The Rooms

The ranch homes (27 in total) are the best choice for families. They range from two-bedroom Meadow Homes to massive four-bedroom Blackfoot River Lodges, each with full kitchens, fireplaces, outdoor grills, and decks perfect for watching deer wander by. Daily housekeeping, private vehicles, and access to all resort activities make them feel like your own home, but way better.

On the flip side, the green o has an entirely different vibe. This adults-only enclave is all about sleek, design-forward accommodations built for two, with layouts that prioritize privacy and seclusion. Stays here come with all-inclusive dining at the intimate (and very impressive) Social Haus, daily guided adventures, and luxurious touches like soaking tubs and private outdoor jacuzzis.

As for glamping, there are 36 safari-style tents spread across six camps, with options for couples, small groups, and families. Most tents sleep two, but some have two bedrooms for up to four people, and the biggest setups can fit six guests—perfect if you’re traveling with a group.

The Food & Drink‍

At Paws Up, dining isn’t just a break between adventures—it’s fully part of the experience. For laid-back breakfasts and hearty lunches, Trough serves elevated comfort food made with local ingredients (don’t miss the wagyu-stuffed Paws Up Chili). Come dinnertime, head next door to Pomp for a more refined affair, where bold, seasonal dishes are paired with an impressive wine list. In the warmer months, Shed is the go-to for casual, crowd-pleasing bites—think triple cheddar mac and cheese, satisfying quesadillas, and fresh salads. And for drinks? A Huckleberry Mule is practically a rite of passage.

Over at the green o, Social Haus, led by Executive Chef Andrew Garrison, is truly a standout. It serves both beautiful and delicious meals all day, complete with a nightly eight-course tasting menu that highlights Montana’s best ingredients. Couple that with craft cocktails or wine pairing, and each night will be one to remember.

The Amenities

The amenities at Paws Up are what set it apart. Accommodations come with huge perks like private hot tubs, chef’s kitchens, fireplaces, and personal Lexus SUVs to get around the property. Step outside, and the offerings only expand: over 70 outdoor activities ranging from horseback rides and fly-fishing and floating on the Blackfoot River to cattle drives in summer and dog sledding or snowshoeing when the snow falls. Dining spans casual ranch fare to refined, seasonal tasting menus at the green o’s Social Haus, with plenty of great wine to sip along the way. Add in a full-service spa, wellness treatments, and pet-friendly touches, and Paws Up earns its reputation as a luxury ranch that’s as adventurous as it is indulgent.

Location & Neighborhood Recs‍

For most guests, there’s little reason to leave the property (the resort itself is the destination). With 37,000 acres of wilderness to explore and so many activities, it’s easy to stay busy. That said, for those who want an off-site adventure, the Blackfoot River is just steps from the property, the historic Garnet Ghost Town is a quick drive away, and Glacier National Park is within reach.
