A Fairytale Stay: Nimb Hotel, Copenhagen

Hotel Snapshot

Be prepared to sigh with delight. I can think of few hotels that quicken the heart like Nimb, which manages to feel like an adult fairytale. No doubt the location, poised on the fringes of Copenhagen’s historic Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s first amusement parks, sets the tone. But the hotel’s extraordinary interiors, as attention-grabbing and deliciously momentous as the park (accessed through its back doors),  feel like an all sensory crescendo. Step its fairytale world (with apologies to homeboy Hans Christian Anderson) in the heart of Copenhagen. A member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Nimb has been a hotel, culinary outpost and portal to the park for more than a century. Extensively renovated in 2008, with enhancements in 2017 and a re-imagined spa and rooftop pool added most recently, the hotel straddles the past and present. It’s hip, contemporary and gorgeous (like every Copenhagener I know), while managing to preserve Tivoli and its history with festive aplomb. It’s a haven of hygge.

Design and Character

Meant to be a folly, in keeping with the whimsical zeitgeist of the park, Nimb was built in 1909. It sports a playful Moorish castle profile, with domes and minarets and a Venetian marble facade. Inside, it’s a veritable cabinet of curiosities, brimming with art, artifacts, Danish design elements, edgy accents , chandeliers, bird motifs, and urbane sensibilities. Think: Moooi’s desk lamps, sleek lines, maximalist nooks and lavish fabrics.  The atmosphere marries friendly with swanky.

The Rooms

With just 38 spacious rooms, including 12 cosseting suites, Nimb conjures thoughts of an ancestral home that flaunts contemporary flourishes woven into its grandeur by the newest generation. It’s absolutely au courant, but with old school legs. Unique, no room is like another, each given personality with pine floors, well-curated antiques from ornate chairs to apothecary cabinets, treasures and gasp-worthy details from candlesticks to statuary. Choose a suite with a terrace, where you can stand above the hubbub of happy humanity playing in Tivoli Gardens. Pampering bathrooms features huge soaking tubs, sinks by Italian bathroom designer Agape and  showers and fixtures originally designed for Copenhagen’s Christiansborg Palace. Meraki bath products and extras such as anti-aging face masks and shaving kits are added pleasures.

Food & Drink

You could say that the entire park is Nimb’s edible oyster. At the hotel, partake of French bistro delights at Nimb Brasserie, an all day eatery known for its breakfast delights and sexy dinner menu.  Snack at Cakenhagen where pastries rule the day or nip libations inspired by Hans Christian Andersen at Bar Nimb. Steps from your room, Gemyse, located in the park ,offers unforgettable, plant-based gastronomy. Throughout the park, scores of upscale and casual restaurants alike await.

Spa & Wellness Scoop

Nimb features an inviting rooftop pool (and bar). Its waters can be set for counter current swimming Tinged with Nimb’s overall exotica, Nimb’s large spa is moody and sultry with an authentic Moroccan Hammam. Serviced offered included a variety of signature massages and facials. The fully equipped Technogym embraces cardiac workouts. Its hot room at around 93 F (34C) enhances detox—and there’s a Crossfit room.

The Amenities

Brimming with five star amenities, Nimb’s best offering is private access to Tivoli Gardens. Enjoy in-room chocolates, free bottled water  and Bang & Olufsen flatscreen televisions, as well as fun bathroom grooming and beauty amenities.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

Tivoli Gardens of course is a must for wall ages. It’s not just Disneyland—there are chic shops, upscale restaurants, nooks to canoodle, rides for kids and much more.  Nimb hotel lies central to most of Copenhagen’s highlights from Nyhavn to Vesterbro and Meatpacking districts. It’s right across from the main railway station, which can whisk you to the airport. Don’t forget my favorite museum The National Museum of Denmark, for the bog mummies and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is a short taxi ride away.
