If there’s a quintessential experience to be had in the Swiss Alps, it starts and ends in Grindelwald. The picture-perfect Swiss town located in the heart of the Jungfrau region embodies the charm, adventure, and all-around beauty of the majestic mountain range, and is perhaps the most delightful (and underrated) destination in the country.
Where to Stay
Grindelloge
Newly renovated in 2025, this Japanese-inspired hotel, conveniently located near the heart of Grindelwald, is the perfect place to lay your head after a long day of adventure. The beautiful mountain landscapes are visible from nearly every window of this stunning property, which is decorated in serene, Japanese-inspired motifs and color palettes.
Hotel Aspen
Hotel Aspen calls itself an alpine lifestyle hotel, and the description couldn’t be more perfect. Located on the outskirts of Grindelwald, approaching the peaks of the nearby mountains, Aspen is the ideal jumping-off point for several local hikes and adventures. A delectable breakfast spread also ensures you’re ready for anything the day has in store.
Where to Eat
Take Away 191
You may not believe that you could find authentic Italian pizza in the middle of Switzerland, but Take Away 191 offers exactly that. Doughs are freshly made, and toppings range from prosciutto with local cheese to mushrooms with anchovies. And P.S., the tiramisu is excellent.
1910
The one-star Michelin restaurant in Grindelwald is located at the beautiful Belvedere Hotel. Headed by Chef Dávid Imre Rózsa, the 1910s-inspired menu changes seasonally, often inspired by Chef’s Hungarian roots and always rooted in Grindelwald’s surroundings. This is the very definition of farm-to-table dining.
Where to Drink
The Seven Spirits Bar
The lobby bar at Bergwelt Grindelwald is simply not to be missed. The elegant surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for a fabulous cocktail, a cold beer, or an expertly crafted mocktail. Check out the cigar bar as well, if that’s your thing.
Avocado Bar Grindelwald
If you’re looking for a divey place for a beverage after a long day of skiing or hiking, be sure to check out the laid-back Avocado Bar for significant energy and great libations. Music nights are a particular draw at this popular watering hole.
Where to Visit
Jungfraujoch
Known as the Top of Europe, Jungfraujoch is the saddle - or slight valley - that connects two major peaks of the Alps – the Jungfrau and the Mönch. It gets its name from being the highest train station in Europe, accessible by a stunning gondola ride (or longer but just as scenic a train ride). No trip to the Jungfrau region is complete without a visit to this icy peak.
Grindewald First
If ziplining, cliff walking, or adventure biking is your thing, Grindelwald First is for you. Alternatively, if hiking, lake views, and panoramic scenery are more your speed, Grindelwald First is also for you. The multitude of activities—both adventurous and epicurean—make this mountaintop a must-visit in the area.
Männlichen
This unbelievable peak is a 20-minute gondola ride from the main terminal of Grindelwald and offers some of the best hiking and views in the area. Take the short but steep Royal Walk to see the entirety of the region in all its splendor.
Staubbach Falls
A short train ride from Grindelwald lies the village of Lauterbrunnen, known for its waterfalls. Perhaps its most famous is the incredible Staubbach Falls, whose roaring rapids fall nearly 300 meters over beautiful and dramatic cliffs that pictures simply cannot do justice to.
Schilthorn - Piz Gloria
If you’re a James Bond fan, then Schilthorn is a must-see. The revolving restaurant at its peak, Piz Gloria, was famously featured in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the 1969 Bond film. But even if you’re not here for 007, you’ll be able to see not only Mönch and Jungfrau, but also 200 additional peaks (including, if you’re lucky, Mont Blanc—the highest mountain in Western Europe).
